Genetics Vocabulary

Adenine: Base Pair in DNA molecule, abbreviated as A and only bonds with thymine (T)

Asexual Reproduction: Type of reproduction that only requires 1 parent creating a clone. Bacteria, Protists, and some plants and animals reproduce this way.

Atom: Basic particle from witch everything is made.

Acquired Traits: Traits that your get from the environment and during your lifetime.

Example: Having purple hair because you dyed it.

Base Pairs: The molecules that the "rungs" of the DNA ladder.

Cell Division: When a cell divides in two.

Characteristics: Describing what something is like.

Chromosome: A structure found in the nucleus of the cell, made out of DNA and found in pairs (1 from mom, 1 from dad).

Clone: An exact copy of a parent, made during asexual reproduction

Cytosine: Base Pair in DNA molecule, abbreviated as C and only bonds with Guanine (G).

DNA: Deoxyribonucleic Acid, the genetic material inside of a cell. It controls traits.

Dominate Trait: A trait that shows up, abbreviated with a CAPITAL LETTER.

Double Helix: The shape of DNA, Looks like a twisted ladder.

Egg Cell: Cells females make for sexual reproduction, has 1/2 of the chromosomes.

Ethics:

Gene: A piece of DNA that directs what a trait should be.

Genetics: The study of how traits get passed from parents to offspring.

Genetic Diversity:

Genetic Engineering:

Genotype: The genes that you have. Example, Bb for eye color where you get the B from your dad and the b from your mom.

Group Trait: Traits that ALL individuals in the species share. Example: All humans have 2 eyes.

Guanine: Base Pair in DNA molecule, abbreviated as G and only bonds with Cytosine (C).

Inherited Trait: A trait that is passed from a parent to an offspring. Example: Eye color.

Mitosis: Cell division when the number of chromosomes stays the same.

Meiosis: Cell division whether the number of chromosomes is half, making sex cells (Sperm and egg cells).

Molecules: More then one atom put together.

Nucleus:

Phenotype: The trait that shows. Example, when you have a Bb only the B shows, the b is hidden.

Phosphate: Part of the Rung on the DNA Ladder. Goes in between the base pairs. .

Punnett Squares: How we predict the probability of what traits an offspring will have.

Recessive Trait: A trait that does not show when a dominate trait is present. Only shows when the "Team Up" Abbreviated with a small case letter. Example b, for blue eyes.

Sexual Reproduction: Reproduction the requires 2 parents and sperm cell and an egg cell combine to make an offspring.

Sex Cells: Cells that are used for sexual reproduction, they have 1/2 the chromosomes, they include egg and sperm cells.

Sperm Cell: Cells males make for sexual reproduction, has 1/2 of the chromosomes.

Stem Cells: Cells that do not have a function yet, then can be made in to any type of cell.
